2012.06.22 Not the camera

I'm grateful for simple pleasures
such as sitting at an outdoor table,
in the shade on a still-hot evening,
waiting on pizza,
with loving and fun family . . .

The important thing is not the camera, but the eye.

2012.06.21 Do not release the shutter

Heuchera "Palace Purple" (common name, Coral Bells) . . .

My theory of composition?
Simple: do not release the shutter until everything in the viewfinder feels just right.
~ Ernst Haas

That's easy . . . right?

2012.06.18 Two people in every picture

Clifty Falls State Park . . .
the campgrounds have been mowed leaving swaths of orchard grass between the sites.
It's as if every site is its own room.

And a photo of me while hiking . . . by Vince . . .

There are always two people in every picture:  the photographer and the viewer.

2012.06.16 The art of observation

Last weekend, one of the places Vince and I went was Madison
and had lunch while watching the Ohio River . . .

A view across the river . . .

Walking around town,
there are many restored and maintained houses
and some houses and buildings which aren't . . .
(The next 4 photos all have The CoffeeShop Blog's Orton action.)

There are wonderful textures on the buildings . . .

To me, photography is an art of observation.
It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place...
I've found it has little to do with the things you see
and everything to do with the way you see them.
