2012.07.31 More real than reality

In photography there is a reality so subtle
that it becomes
more real than reality.
~ Alfred Stieglitz

His glory fills the world.
~ Isaiah 6:3b

2012.07.29 A sense of inclusion

Both photos taken at Lake Monroe, Indiana, while on a camping trip . . .

At our best and most fortunate
we make pictures because of what stands in front of the camera,
to honor what is greater and more interesting than we are.
We never accomplish this perfectly,
though in return we are given something perfect - a sense of inclusion.
Our subject thus redefines us,
and is part of the biography by which we want to be known.
~ Robert Adams

From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets,
the name of the LORD is to be praised.
~ Psalm 113:3

And then do it.

2012.07.24 What we look for

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.
~ John Lubbock

What I look for?
What I'm drawn to?
What attracts me?
Compositions I can alter.
~ Me

Note:
This studio is where I took my Monrovia Mudworks pottery class.
Thanks, jan and Greg, for the wonderful birthday gift.

2012.07.21 Something essential

If a day goes by without my doing something related to photography,
it's as though I've neglected something essential to my existence,
as though I had forgotten to wake up.
~ Richard Avedon

2012.07.19 I arrange myself

Upper Cataract Falls . . .

I work from awkwardness.
By that I mean I don't like to arrange things.
If I stand in front of something, instead of arranging it, I arrange myself.

Time is a dressmaker, specializing in alterations.
~ Faith Baldwin

The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.

2012.07.14 A tiny subject

Sometimes you can tell a large story with a tiny subject.
~ Elliot Porter

However, she's obviously miffed and isn't speaking to me.
Maybe I should ask Rainfield.

The photo has several processing steps including Pixel Dust Photo Art's Cubed texture.

2012.07.13 Momentary visual appearance

Most times, we look at objects for their utilitarian purpose.
But as photographers, we regard them for their momentary visual appearance.

2012.07.09 It's what you see

It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.
~ Henry David Thoreau

What I was looking at was one of the posts for the garage porch.
What I saw was a dragon.

Thursday

2012.07.05 Now it is yours

As I have practiced it, photography produces pleasure by simplicity.
I see something special and show it to the camera.
A picture is produced.
The moment is held until someone sees it.
Then it is theirs.

2012.07.04 Always better or worse

Reminiscent of fireworks . . .

Do you know what this is?
I'll post the answer here in a few days.
However, the home internet is down.
Since last Sunday.
Completely.
It's supposed to be back next Monday.
Maybe.
Oh, the joys of living in rural Indiana.  [smirk]
But, happily . . .
I'm posting this thanks to my son, John, and his smart phone :)

Update:
Internet is back and it's only Thursday!
Yippee!
What it is....yep, it's a white pine.
Thanks for playing along.
